Stewart Metz trained at Yale Medical School as an Internist and at the University of Washington as an Endocrinologist. He subsequently received tenure as a Professor of Medicine at two universities/medical schools but left medicine in 1999 to work full-time as a volunteer for animal rights (especially for parrots) and for parrot conservation in the wild. Stewart has written a number of articles on issues related to parrot care, ethics, and conservation. Stewart Metz is the President and CEO of The Indonesian Parrot Project, an organization working to conserve endangered Indonesian parrots in the wild. They focus on the Moluccan Cockatoo, the Citron-crested Cockatoo, the Palm Cockatoo, and the Great-billed Parrot. A major part of their approach is to provide sustainable sources of income to the local villagers instead of trapping birds. Stewart's talk at this year's event will illustrate the true needs of parrots by contrasting lifestyles in captivity to those in the wild. His presentation will feature his photographs of wild parrots.
