Apollo

“HHHHHIIIIIIIIII!!!!!! My name is Apollo!”

Apollo is a Green Wing Macaw who eagerly greets volunteers and visitors with his whispery but excited “HI!” often accompanied by a wave of his foot.

Apollo is 19 years old and is a spirited young man. He was initially surrendered to MAARS in 2003 and was adopted shortly thereafter. He lived with this guardian until 2015 when she was diagnosed with a terminal illness and returned to MAARS.

Our largest resident, Apollo has the personality to match. A total clown, his antics include hanging upside down, screaming at the top of his lungs, and of course his famous foot wave. Parrots are known for testing what they can get away with; Apollo is a pro at walking the line! “Innocently” tugging on clothing as a volunteer walks by or chucking toys out of a bucket to the floor so humans must come and put them back in the bucket… only so he can do it again!

Apollo loves being involved with whatever task the volunteers are working on, whether it’s prepping veggies, sorting paperwork, or cleaning enclosures. He particularly loves singing his heart out – usually without a human witness in sight – belting out his favorite opera songs as loud as he can. If a volunteer pops their head around the corner to sneak a peek, he abruptly stops singing, a boisterous chanteur with stage fright! He loves being the center of attention and yet he still hides his exuberant songs!
