Bebe

As it was for many of us, 2021 was a tough one for Bebe – her long-term mate Sam M2 died. She loved Sam deeply and his death hit her very hard. Grief in birds is the same as in humans: we all need those who love us for support and understanding; some days are harder than others to cope. At times we need a quiet companion to share our space so it doesn’t feel as empty; other times we are angry and lash out at the whole world because of the pain.

Bebe is a fierce protector with a wild heart and is often actively hostile to humans. Vulnerable and raw from her debilitating loss, she has been tolerating a bit more human interaction; right now quietly sitting with her is often more reassuring to her than anything else we could do.

Bebe pursued Sam with calm patience – it was she who decided they would be partners – and Sam slowly accepted her as a dedicated companion. Since Sam died in late 2021, Bebe is grieving at her own pace; she will let us know when she is ready to find a new friend.

All she needs from us is kind compassion, the same thing anyone needs. Bebe may never be a human-friendly parrot, but that’s ok by us. All we want for her is to be happy and secure and to have feathered friends of her choosing when she is ready.

Bebe is a medium-sized parrot, the cost for her food, medicine, and toys is approximately $40 a month or $480 a year. If you would like to contribute to her health and well-being, please click. Thank you!
