Sputnik

Sputnik is up for the challenge – he can get into anything. Whether it’s busting out of his enclosure (and subsequently freeing his parrot comrades), taking apart “indestructible” toys, or breaking items actually intended to be destroyed, he’s pretty much conquered it all. With his unparalleled dedication to the task, nothing is Sputnik-proof.

Sputnik is just doing what parrots in captivity do – as highly intelligent, social, and inquisitive beings, they need diverse enrichment for their busy feet and beaks. Sometimes that means being gently playful, occasionally it means mass destruction. At times it means they will play with the toys we offer, but often it means they find things to dismantle that aren’t ideal… and may include taking apart the whole house.

Sputnik came in as a foundling, likely abandoned outside by his previous caretakers. Arriving without a name, he took to the moniker Sputnik immediately, Spud for short. When Sputnik isn’t actively destroying the sanctuary, he’s running up and down the halls dancing to his favorite songs and shouting “Hi Spud!” in his small-but-mighty voice, obviously leaving shrapnel in his wake. We may not know much about his past but his future is certain – all the nuts and bolts and locks to dismantle that this little potato could ever dream of.

Sputnik is an Umbrella Cockatoo, a large-size parrot whose costs for food, toys, and medicine are approximately $60 per month or $720 per year. If you would like to contribute to his health and well-being, no matter the amount, please click. Thank you!
