Our History

Since  the founding of MAARS in July 1999, almost 1500 unwanted  parrots have  come through our doors. More than 1400 birds have been successfully placed into permanent homes. We’ve consistently grown since then, all thanks to the helping hands of this amazing community!

Our Mission

MAARS’ core function is to care for our flock at our facility, The Landing. Our primary mission is to educate the public, people who already live with parrots, and the veterinary community about the issues that face captive parrots.

Did you know parrots can paint? MAARS was inspired to offer birds at the shelter an opportunity to paint by the work of other captive wildlife sanctuaries and rescues, especially those serving elephants and primates. The birds use both their beaks and feet to hold the paintbrushes and put the brush to canvas themselves. If interested in purchasing some of their artwork available in paintings, ornaments and greeting cards please click here: maars.org. We are all volunteer run, so all proceeds go towards bird care!

One of our many talented volunteers put together a somewhat humorous look inside a day at MAARS:
